Biographies are a funny thing, but it’s a flat fact that we all have one.
Sometimes, we spice it up a bit, or even make up complete parts.
In Real Life a biography is unique for everybody, which makes them the proof of what defines us an individual. It’s the sum of our experiences, actions and choices in our life, with all interpretations and emotions those may cause.
Of course, it’s a bit sad nowadays many people write a biography as if it were as a “personal achievement essay”, which actually is only part of a true biography.
Since Second Life® offers endless amounts of diffirent lifestyles, it’s very tempting to create a bio to go with your avatar.
One can do it together, separate or mixed with a bio of your RL time spent in SL® (the kind that’s mostly stating what you’ve done so far, telling your skills, etc… like my “About page” I have here).
Some people may find it too wierd to make such an “avatar bio”, and consider it a perfect example of how metaverses like Second Life® are why a person experiences a “social alienation”.
But being a believer that it’s something of all ages to escape in something, I think it’s only normal to have the desire to add history to the object of our way to escape.
Let me clarify this (personal) point of view a bit (you may skip this part if you already understood what I ment):
What used to be stories, and myths (and some aspects of most religions), gradually became theatre and books, and has now become available to us in many new media. That basically is the history of healthy escapism (in a nutshell) as it developed itself when mankind discovered it’s imagination skills.
The only “unusual aspect” is that now we actually have to chance to not imagine or witness such imagination (“The Performing Arts”), but we have developed more and more channels to experience it ourselves (it grew from childs play with cardboard swords in the backyard, to computer games and alike).
And if we choose to “create a history” to go with the channel (our avatars) of a specific media (SL®), there is no real reason to think of it as strange, since many childrens games, theatre plays and world famous novels have some informative history either in footnotes, addenda or sporadically placed in the actual story.
So, (imho) we can conclude creating a history, to match your personal channel for (your desired medium of) escapism is perfectly normal.
Feel free to correct me if you think I’m wrong.
The topic wouldn’t have got me thinking if I wouldn’t be in the process of creating such an “avatar bio” myself.
